  • Paul Budnitz

Paul Budnitz is the founder of Kidrobot, the world's premiere creator of art toys, fashion apparel and accessories.

The son of a nuclear physicist and a social worker, Paul Budnitz was professionally coding safety analysis software for nuclear power plants by the time he reached high school. He also created video games for the now-legendary Commodore 64 home computer. By the time he reached college he swore he'd "never touch another computer again."

Budnitz's career took an unexpected turn in 2002 when he came across images of edgy vinyl toys that were coming out of China and Japan. These toys included "vinyl toys based on cereal box characters, and remixed GI-Joes turned into stylized B-boys."

He recognized the quirky, intricate toys as works of popular-art, pieces that mixed many aesthetic movements he loved -- including fashion, cartoons, graffiti, comics, music, and fine art. Budnitz sold Minidisco and sunk the proceeds into founding Kidrobot in a California garage in 2002.

  • DUNNY

A DUNNY is a type of vinyl designer art toy created by Paul Budnitz and Tristan Eaton, and produced by Kidrobot since 2004.

The art toy is based on a rabbit figure with distinctive tubular ears. The origin of the name Dunny came from a combination of street slang and one of the early "Devil Bunny" prototypes. The Dunny is sold in 3-, 5-, 8- and 20-inch scales, though artists have customized Dunny models as tall as four feet. The toy has three points of articulation; a 360-degree rotational head and two arms. Some come with accessories, such as laser guns, ice cream cones, marker pens, Geisha fans, gas masks, crowns and hooded sweatshirts. Artist cards or stickers are also included, mainly with the annual series releases. Other (often themed) series releases typically include only a leaflet with the designs from that series.

  • Labbits and Littons

Labbit is a rabbit character created by famed pop artist and Kidrobot Chief Creative Officer, Frank Kozik. First featured in Kozik’s famous nineties rock poster art, the Labbit was brought to life by Kidrobot. As the story goes the character was originally supposed to be a Smoking Rabbit, but the Japanese manufacturer misprinted the packaging to say 'Smorkin Labbit. From then on it became known as a Labbit. Most famous in the original smorkin’ labbit variety, Labbit can also be found sporting a handsome ‘Stache and even the occasional beard. His shape and signature "butthole" remain the same, although his color, facial expression, existence of a mustache or items in his mouth vary.

Since the beginning of Labbit, there have been hundreds of different versions of the Labbit created in vinyl, plush and printed on apparel. In 2016, Kidrobot released the first baby Labbits which became known as a Litton.

More importantly, we are human. We are a group of dreamers who want to create a space where art, design and surprise meet. In a store. On our website. In a conference room. Or living room. Where the conversations about art and design take place. But it's the element of surprise - the nod, the magic - that finds its way into all we do, which creates our point of difference. It keeps things interesting, making people want to stick around to see what's next.

WHAT KIDROBOT DOES

We instigate creative conversation. Between artists and collectors. Parents and kids. Stores and shoppers. Between one another. About new products. Emerging artists. The backstory behind a creation. We get people talking. We get them excited. We bring art to life.

WHY KIDROBOT DOES WHAT THEY DO

We remind you what its like to feel amazed.  That feeling when you come across something new, unexpected, shocking, offbeat. A raw reaction that drives you to keep exploring and discovering - it's pure childlike wonder that you can experience over and over.  We want to make you react. Positive or negative, but never indifferent.
